About North Western State Medical University

North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov (NWSMU) is a prominent medical institution located in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Established in 2011 through the merger of two historic medical academies, NWSMU has rapidly become a cornerstone of medical education in the region. The university is named in honor of Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov, a distinguished Russian scientist and Nobel laureate renowned for his pioneering work in immunology.

The roots of NWSMU trace back to the early 20th century. The institution was established in 1907 under the direction of academician Vladimir Bekhterev and developed by the Russian Government through the Ministry of Health. Over the decades, the university underwent several transformations:

  • 1907–1920: Functioned as the Medical Faculty of the Psycho Neurological Institute.
  • 1920–1936: Renamed as the Second Leningrad Medical Institute.
  • 1936–1946: Merged with a city hospital and named after Nobel Laureate Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov.
  • 1946–1994: Known as the Leningrad Medical Institute of Sanitary and Hygiene.
  • 1994–2011: Became the St. Petersburg State Medical Academy named after I.I. Mechnikov.
  • 2011–Present: Established as the North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov following the merger.

Rooms are shared, typically by six to eight students, and are furnished with essential amenities such as beds, desks, chairs, lamps, and bookshelves. Shared facilities like kitchens, toilets, and shower rooms are available within the dormitories.
