About Al-Farabi Kazakh National University
Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU), located in Almaty, Kazakhstan, stands as a beacon of higher education and research in Central Asia. Established in 1934, it is the nation’s oldest classical university and has consistently maintained its reputation for academic excellence and innovation. Named after the renowned philosopher and scholar Al-Farabi, KazNU embodies a rich blend of historical significance and modern advancement.
KazNU’s inception dates back to November 13, 1933, following a decree by the Kazakh Regional Committee. The university officially commenced its academic journey on January 15, 1934, with initial faculties in Biology, Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry. Over the decades, KazNU expanded its academic horizons, introducing faculties in Humanities, Foreign Languages, Journalism, Geography, Philosophy, Economics, and Law. This growth mirrored Kazakhstan’s evolving educational and societal needs, positioning KazNU at the forefront of the nation’s academic landscape.
Spanning an impressive 100 hectares, KazNU’s campus, affectionately known as “Kazgugrad,” is nestled amidst Almaty’s picturesque surroundings. The main building, a 15-story edifice, houses the university administration alongside the faculties of History, Economics, Law, Philology, and Journalism. The campus boasts 13 educational buildings covering 165,000 square meters, complemented by scientific laboratories occupying 18,940 square meters. Additionally, 17 dormitories provide accommodation, fostering a vibrant on-campus student community. A secondary campus at the intersection of Karasay Batyr and Masanchi streets accommodates the faculties of Philosophy and Political Science, Oriental Studies, Preparatory, and International Relations.
Global Recognition and Rankings
KazNU’s dedication to academic and research excellence has garnered international acclaim. In the 2023 QS World University Rankings, KazNU achieved the 150th position globally, underscoring its status as Kazakhstan’s premier university. Furthermore, it secured the 44th spot in the QS Asia University Rankings 2023, reflecting its prominent standing in the Asian academic arena.
Strategic Vision and Development
In alignment with its mission to evolve into a world-class research university, KazNU was designated as a research university by a government decree on July 25, 2022. This milestone led to the approval of the KazNU Development Program for 2022-2026, charting a strategic path focused on enhancing research capabilities, fostering innovation, and integrating advanced technologies into academic programs.
