About Kazan Federal University

Kazan Federal University (KFU), one of Russia’s oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education, is located in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. Established in 1804, KFU has a rich history of academic excellence, scientific innovation, and cultural diversity. Founded by the decree of Emperor Alexander I on November 5, 1804, Kazan University initially served as a center of higher learning in the eastern part of Russia. In 1925, the university was named after Vladimir Lenin, one of its most famous students, and it retained that name until 2010, when it was transformed into Kazan Federal University under a Russian government initiative to establish federal universities to enhance research and global competitiveness.

Mathematician Nikolai Lobachevsky, who served as the university’s rector, developed non-Euclidean geometry, revolutionizing mathematics. Another notable figure, Karl Ernst von Baer, made significant contributions to embryology while working at KFU.
